An Automotive Tire Assembly Manipulator is a specialized material-handling device designed to lift, orient, and position heavy tire and wheel assemblies onto vehicle hubs. These systems are critical in automotive plants to bridge the gap between heavy manual labor and high-speed robotic precision.

1. Core Functionality

Tire manipulators solve the “heavy lifting” problem in assembly. A modern SUV or truck wheel can weigh between 25kg to 50kg. Handling hundreds of these per shift is impossible for a human without assistance and risks repetitive strain injuries.

The manipulator typically utilizes a “Zero-Gravity” or pneumatic balancing system, which makes the heavy tire feel weightless to the operator, allowing for precise alignment with the wheel lugs.

2. Key Components & Features

Specialized End-Effectors (Grippers): Internal Expansion: Grips the tire by the inner rim.
External Clamping: Grabs the outer diameter of the rubber.
Tread Grippers: Uses rollers to allow the tire to be rotated while held, making it easier to align bolt holes.
Multi-Axis Movement: Most units offer 3 to 6 degrees of freedom (DOF), including tilt (90° for horizontal to vertical pick-up) and 360° rotation.
Safety Interlocks: Prevents the gripper from releasing the tire until the sensors detect that the wheel is securely seated on the hub or a rack.
